Buying a Used Phone? 10 Things to Check Before You Pay

Check a used iPhone or Samsung before paying: account locks, battery, repairs, network, cameras and proof of purchase. A practical Kenya buying checklist.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Buy the individual phone, not just the model name. Test it with your SIM, check its condition and repair history, and make sure the previous owner can remove their accounts before you pay.

  • Test calls, mobile data, cameras and charging yourself.
  • A serial number or a clean-looking box is only one piece of evidence.
  • Include likely battery or repair costs in your budget.

Start with the exact device in front of you

Two used phones with the same name and storage can be very different purchases. One may have a worn battery; another may have a replacement display or an account lock. Ask for enough time to inspect the actual device you will take home, with its case removed.

Bring your SIM, a compatible charger and a short checklist. For an eSIM-only model, arrange a practical activation or network demonstration before committing. A seller rushing you through these checks is a reason to pause.

The 10 checks to make before paying

  1. Confirm the model and storage in Settings. Compare them with the listing and receipt; a box can belong to another phone.
  2. Inspect the frame, back, camera lenses and screen under good light. Look for cracks, lifting edges and gaps. A raised screen can need urgent assessment.
  3. Test the full touchscreen, brightness and keyboard. Open a plain light and dark screen to look for obvious patches or display damage.
  4. Make a call with your SIM. Test the earpiece, loudspeaker and microphone, then check mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
  5. Try every camera lens, autofocus, video and flash. Record and replay a short clip instead of judging only the camera preview.
  6. Check the charging port and a compatible cable. Confirm it charges reliably without having to hold the cable at an angle.
  7. Review battery information where available. Ask about actual runtime and replacements; a percentage alone cannot describe all battery behaviour.
  8. Review repair history. On supported iPhones, check Parts and Service History; ask what was replaced and whether the repair is documented.
  9. Have the seller remove their Apple, Google and manufacturer accounts and complete the proper erase process. Set it up enough to confirm it does not request the previous owner’s credentials.
  10. Get the agreed model, storage, condition, price and warranty terms in writing. Confirm who handles problems and keep proof of payment.

Decide what a defect is worth

A small cosmetic mark and an unreliable charging port are not equivalent. The first may be acceptable at the right price; the second can interrupt work or leave you unable to charge. Ask for a diagnosis and written repair estimate before treating a fault as an easy bargain.

Use this comparison: purchase price + immediately needed repairs + necessary accessories. Compare that total with a better-condition example. A lower advertised price is not automatically a lower ownership cost.

Account locks are a stop sign

Apple advises against buying an iPhone displaying “iPhone Locked to Owner”. A promise that it can be removed later is not a substitute for the seller completing the official process now. Similar ownership checks can appear on Android after a reset.

At Hooda’s Parklands shop, ask to confirm the specific device, configuration and warranty before ordering. Availability and condition should be checked for the exact unit, even when you have already selected a model online.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions

Is a used phone with 100% battery health automatically a good buy?

No. Still test the phone, check any repair information and confirm account removal. A displayed percentage does not prove the whole device is original or fault-free.

Should I reset the phone myself before paying?

Have the seller follow the manufacturer’s account-removal and erase process with you present. Confirm setup afterwards; an erase alone does not prove an ownership lock has been removed.
