Before You Sell or Trade In Your Phone: Protect Your Data and Prepare Your Device

Prepare an iPhone or Android phone for sale safely: verify backups, transfer accounts, remove ownership locks and follow the correct erase process.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Transfer and verify your data first, then remove accounts and erase the old phone using the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not hand over a device that still contains personal data or asks for your account during setup.

  • Confirm the replacement phone works before wiping the old one.
  • Erasing a device is different from deleting your online account.
  • Describe condition and repairs honestly when requesting a quote.

Prepare the replacement before the handover

Check calls, messages, photos, documents, banking access and authenticators on the phone you will keep. A missing authenticator or number transfer can be more disruptive than a missing wallpaper. Keep any provider-approved recovery methods secure and available.

Verify the latest backup separately. Do not rely on an assumption that everything transferred because the setup process finished without an error. Open representative old and recent files before proceeding.

Follow the official iPhone process

Apple’s trade-in preparation guidance covers backup or transfer, relevant accessory unpairing, signing out and erasing. Follow the current steps for your device and software. If switching platforms, review the iMessage guidance too.

Do not delete synced photos one by one as a way of clearing the phone: that can affect copies elsewhere. Use the proper erase flow after protecting your data. Confirm your SIM or eSIM service has moved appropriately before removing it from the old device.

Follow the official Android process

Google advises removing your accounts from the old device and using the correct factory-reset process. Manufacturer accounts or device-management settings may also need attention. Use instructions for the exact device rather than assuming every Android menu is identical.

Removing a Google Account from a phone is not the same as deleting the account itself. Keep the online account if you still need its email, photos, purchases or other services on your replacement device.

Check what you are handing over

  • The phone should reach its normal welcome/setup screen without displaying your personal content.
  • Confirm it does not require your old account to complete ownership verification.
  • Remove physical SIMs and memory cards that are not included in the sale.
  • Collect your case, charger or accessories unless they are part of the agreed offer.
  • Keep a written record of the device, agreed condition, price and handover.

Get a realistic valuation

Clean the exterior using the manufacturer’s recommended method and describe faults, repairs and missing accessories accurately. A quote based on incomplete information may change after inspection. Avoid paying for a cosmetic repair solely to increase resale value without comparing the likely benefit.

Ask whether a trade-in arrangement is actually available and what inspection it requires before relying on it to fund the next purchase. A catalogue listing does not automatically imply a trade-in promise. Keep control of your passwords and one-time codes throughout any assisted handover.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY

Common questions

Is a factory reset enough before selling?

Use the complete manufacturer process, including account and ownership-lock removal where required. A reset alone may leave the next person unable to activate the device.

Should I delete my Google or Apple Account entirely?

Usually you are removing the account from the old device, not deleting the online account and its services. Follow the device-specific instructions carefully.
